I have been designing houses in Western Australia since 1986.
Fifteen years at Grounds Kent Architects, and since 2004 my own studio on Girton Lane in Fremantle — small by choice, so I can stay involved from the first conversation through to the day the keys turn over.
I offer a complete and personal architectural service, specialising in houses. Every project is designed individually — to your taste, your requirements, your budget and your site — and I bring considerable experience to working that through with you.
I care about the quality of a space as much as how it looks: rooms that contribute to physical and emotional wellbeing, layouts that are functional and efficient, and buildings that incorporate environmental sustainability as a matter of course. Every design sets out to maximise northern light, cross ventilation and multiple outlooks — and to frame what is worth framing.
Three things I hold to on every project, whatever its size.
Before any drawing, I want to walk the block with you. Where the wind comes from, where the sun sits at four in the afternoon, what you want to see when you wake.
I work slowly, and by hand at the start. The plan is the house. If the plan is right, everything downstream is easier.
I stay on through documentation and construction. The details that matter most are usually decided on site, in conversation with the builder.
Where I work
The studio is on Girton Lane in Fremantle, and much of my work is close by — new houses and additions in Fremantle, Cottesloe, Peppermint Grove, Claremont and Subiaco, including the careful reworking of older houses.
The other half is three hours south, on the coast between Dunsborough and Margaret River — Eagle Bay, Bunker Bay, Yallingup, Quindalup, Busselton — where holiday houses and permanent homes are shaped by the ocean, the wind and the light. Occasionally further afield: resort work in Bali, and small commercial buildings back home.

The studio is in Fremantle. Most projects are in the Perth metropolitan area and the South West of Western Australia — Dunsborough, Eagle Bay, Bunker Bay, Yallingup, Quindalup, Busselton and Margaret River — with occasional resort work further afield, including Bali.
New houses, holiday houses, alterations and additions — including heritage houses in Fremantle — and the occasional small resort or commercial building. The practice is deliberately small, so I am personally involved from the first conversation to completion.
With a conversation, ideally on the site. I walk the block with you to understand the wind, the sun, the views and how you want to live, then prepare concept sketches before anything is drawn in detail.
Yes. I prepare the drawings and documentation for planning and building approvals and deal with the local council on your behalf.
Fees depend on the scope and are agreed at the outset — usually either a percentage of the construction cost or a fixed fee for defined stages. The best first step is a phone call to talk through the project.
Yes. I am registered with the Architects Board of Western Australia, registration number 2031, and have been designing houses in Western Australia since 1986.
